Long Stem Planting

A method of planting mature woody stemmed plants, developed by Bill Hicks.

Picture

Improves plant survival as:

  • New roots sprout from the leaf nodes along the buried woody stem;
  • The original root ball is buried deeper, in soil less prone to drying, baking, or freezing, and away from competing weed roots;
  • There is less stem exposed to wind breakage, sunburn and frost burn.

How to Long Stem Plant

To care for plants prior to planting: soak pots in a bucket of water for 1-2 hours in preference to overhead watering. Try to avoid over drying.

At Planting:
  1. Tube stock must be thoroughly soaked in water/dilute Seasol before being taken out of the tube to plant.
  2. Dig holes that are deep enough to allow three-quarters of the plant to be buried. Roughen the edges of the hole if it has been made by powered tools to allow the roots to penetrate the walls more easily.
  3. Fill the hole with water and allow to drain away.
  4. Prune side branches or large leaves from the lower portion of the stem that impede placement of the seedling in the hole when planting.
  5. Place the plant in the hole with about one quarter of the plant above the ground and backfill carefully, alternating with soil and water to rid any air pockets from drying out the roots.
  6. Make a dish-shaped depression in the soil around the stem of the plant to catch rain.
